Notifications and background
Which events send a system notification, the menu bar icon, and what happens when you close the window or quit.
When Kettu notifies you
Kettu sends a system notification only while no Kettu window is in front, so it never interrupts what you are reading. Turn each kind on or off in Settings › Notifications; all are on by default.
| Setting | Notifies when |
|---|---|
| Needs approval | An agent waits for you to allow something, including a new site in the browser |
| Turn finished | An agent finishes what you asked |
| Routine runs | A routine’s run ended, or routines paused at a plan limit |
| Errors | A session fails or an agent stops unexpectedly |
The notification is titled with the session’s name. Click it to go to that session; a notification about paused routines opens the Routines page. A newer notification for the same session replaces the older one.
The same page sets how you are told:
- Play a sound uses the system notification sound. It is off by default.
- Show a count on the Dock icon on macOS, or Show a count on the taskbar button on Windows, shows how many sessions wait for your approval. It is on by default.
- Send a test notification shows a sample, even while Kettu is in front.
The menu bar icon
From launch until it quits, Kettu has an icon in the macOS menu bar, the Windows notification area or the Linux system tray. It gets a dot while a permission request waits. Its menu says how many sessions are running and how many need approval, with Open Kettu and Quit Kettu. On Windows, clicking the icon opens the window.
After you close the window
Closing the window does not quit Kettu. Sessions and routines keep working; click Kettu in the Dock, or Open Kettu in the menu bar icon, to bring the window back.
Closing the last window quits Kettu. To keep it running with its icon, so sessions and routines keep working, turn on Settings › General › Run in the background. It is off by default.
While remote access is on, Kettu keeps running after you close its window, so your devices can connect, and Run in the background stays on.
Routines run only while Kettu is open. Settings › General › Open at login starts Kettu when you log in to your computer.
Quitting
Quit with ⌘Q on macOS, or with Quit Kettu in the icon’s menu on any system. On Windows and Linux, closing the last window also quits while Run in the background is off.
If sessions are working or terminal commands are running, Kettu asks first, since quitting stops them. To skip that question, turn off Settings › General › Ask before quitting while agents or terminal commands are running. Kettu also asks when files in the Files pane have unsaved changes.
