Terminal

Terminals for each project in the side panel, running your own shell in the project folder.

Each project has its own terminals in the side panel. They start in the project folder and run your shell, so they see the same tools as the terminal you already use.

Opening and closing

  • Click Terminal in the top bar, or press Ctrl+` (Control on macOS too). In a project without a terminal, one starts by itself.
  • New terminal, or Ctrl+Shift+`, opens another tab.
  • Closing the panel only hides it. The terminals keep running, with their output, until you close their tabs or quit Kettu.
  • Close a tab with its close button or a middle click. If a command is still running, Kettu asks End this terminal? first, and End process ends it.
  • Double-click a tab to rename it, and drag tabs to reorder them. A green dot marks a tab running a command, a gray dot new output in a tab you are not looking at.
  • Maximize gives the terminal the whole window.

When the shell exits, the tab shows the exit code and Restart starts a new one.

Shell

SystemDefault shell
macOS, LinuxYour $SHELL, as a login shell
Windowspwsh when it is installed, else Windows PowerShell

To use another program, pick it in Settings › Terminal › Shell with Choose…; Reset goes back to the default. Font size (12, 13 or 14 px) is there too. New terminals use the change. The terminal’s colors follow the theme, and programs in it see TERM_PROGRAM=Kettu.

With your sessions

The terminals belong to the project, not to one session: every session in the project shows the same ones.

  • Select text and click Ask Claude Code (named after the session’s agent), or press ⌘L on macOS, Ctrl+L on Windows and Linux. The selection goes into the composer as a code block, for you to add a question and send.
  • Right-click a command the agent ran and choose Run in terminal. It is typed into a new terminal without running, so you can change it first.
  • Right-click in the terminal for Copy, Paste, Select all and Clear. Copy and paste are ⌘C and ⌘V on macOS, Ctrl+Shift+C and Ctrl+Shift+V on Windows and Linux.

Quitting with a command running

Kettu asks before quitting while a terminal command is running, because quitting stops it. To skip the question, turn off Settings › General › Ask before quitting while agents or terminal commands are running.
